Our Ten Favourite Things About Mockingjay Part One
***CONTAINS SPOILERS***
We don’t need to tell you that one of the biggest films in the SFF calendar was released last Friday, and as true Hunger Games fans, the Del Rey team was first in the queue.
So without further ado, here are our favourite bits. (Warning: contains mild spoilers, so do look away if you haven’t seen it yet!)
10. The Hanging Tree
Not only was it great to hear this song which features in the book, but Jennifer Lawrence’s voice was on pointe in a truly haunting way.
9. The Rebels
These snippets of rebellion from the districts were so moving. While Katniss is making movies in District 13, real sacrifices are being made in the others. RESPECT.
8. The White Roses
President Snow’s horrifying message in glorious technicolour. The mass of white roses spread on the ground was both chilling, and strangely beautiful.
7. Julianne Moore as President Alma Coin
Authoritative, assertive and awesome, Julianne’s Coin kicked ass. We loved her speech at the end and can’t wait to see her character develop in Part Two.
6. Philip Seymour Hoffman as Plutarch Heavensbee
We must pay tribute (no pun intended) to PSH . One of his last film roles before his death, he is the true realization of Plutarch.
5. Jennifer Lawrence
It’s difficult to pick out a scene here as JLaw is amazing and our all-time idol. But if we had to, Katniss’s breakdown after having spoken to President Snow was pretty intense.
4. Buttercup the Cat
One of the best lines in the film: ‘my sister gets to keep her cat’.
3. The Hospital
… and the patients doing the mockingjay salute, shortly followed by the first propaganda video. Angry Katniss is ready for a fight! ‘If we burn, you burn with us!’
2. Angry Peeta
He is seriously scary at the end.
1. The Ending
As were most people, we were worried about which point the producers would choose to end Part One, effectively splicing the third book into two parts. We loved the moment that was chosen – the first storyline of the book was concluded, and we’re left with a cliffhanger and the beginning of an out and out war. Fabulous.
